If your mail program ever tries to connect to the mail server and it fails, it can cause your password to "unsave". Just simply type it in again and it will start 'auto remembering' it as it did before.
This can also happen if the mail server is given updated software or patches are installed. As like above, just re-enter your password and it should save it as before.
